Garage Door Roller Replacement Services in the GTA & Barrie Area

Garage door roller replacement

Did you know the average garage door is opened and closed on average 1,500 times each year? That puts a lot of wear and tear on your garage door components. Your garage door consists of many parts that work together to create a smooth, safe operation. One of the most important elements of your garage door is the rollers. They run along the track to lift and close your garage door safely. At Profix, our professional garage door roller replacements ensure these small, but important, elements keep your doors safe every time they operate. Because they are a major component, they wear down over years of constant use. With proper maintenance checks, you can ensure they last their full life expectancy. However, there are several signs that tell you it’s time to replace your garage door rollers including:

  • Garage Door Misaligned: If your garage door doesn’t open seamlessly it could be that your door is not aligned with the tracks and rails.
  • Jamming: If your garage door stops working or hesitates when opening or closing, it could be because the rollers are getting jammed.
  • Noisy Operation: Noisy operation, especially squeaks and squeals are often due to the rollers scraping against the track.

If these problems sound familiar, give the Profix team a call to come out and assess your garage doors.

How Long Should Garage Door Rollers Last?

Garage door rollers should last on average about 10 years. However, it really depends on how often you use your garage doors and what type of rollers you have. The average household opens its doors 1,500 times per year. Your garage door users’ manual usually tells you how long you can expect the components of your garage door to last. However, if your doors are quite old, and/or you aren’t the original owner of the door, then you might not have access to that information. It also depends on what type of rollers you have as they come in different materials including:

  • Plastic rollers: two to five years
  • Steel rollers with ball bearings: 10 to 15 years
  • Steel rollers without ball bearings: two to five years
  • Nylon rollers: 12 to 20 years

Common Causes of Garage Door Roller Damage

One of the main causes of garage door damage is, simply, age. However, there are other factors that can lead to garage door roller issues including:

  • Poor lubrication: Lubrication helps rollers operate smoothly along the tracks. This is especially important for steel rollers. If the rollers can’t roll smoothly along the tracks, they can fall off as they struggle against the friction of metal on metal.
  • Track issues: Track issues can also occur over time. However, tracks can also be damaged by vehicles that can hit them when leaving or entering the garage. Dents, bends and misalignments can cause the rollers to either not remain in contact with the rails or come off the rails because of the misalignment.
  • Dirt buildup: Over time, even with lubrication you can see a buildup of grease and dirt that can lead to rust. This creates a barrier between the rail and roller which means they can’t roll properly, so can slide or come right off the rails.
  • Ball bearings: If you have steel railings with ball bearings, damage and dirt can cause issues with the ball bearings. This in turn can cause the rollers to come off the rails or become bent and dented.

Annual maintenance can help keep your rollers in tip-top shape. As well our Profix maintenance experts also look for signs parts are getting too worn and should be replaced. You can speak to the Profix team about annual garage door maintenance today.
